forces emerge naturally as the “corrections” needed to preserve local symmetries at every point in spacetime. I think gauge fields finally clicked after watching this video.
The fact that you can actually answer "why is electromagnetism a thing" is incredible to me. It explains why photons are massless, why electric and magnetic fields interact, it derives maxwell's equations... all from a simple fact that the dirac equation has local phase symmetry. mind blown.
