Perhaps naive is one word for it. But I would say more that people with a strong sense of honor cannot conceive of someone so devoid of even the most basic tingling of honor. Those men were not only capable of shame and humiliation, it was a major social force in their lives and society at the time.
They could not conceive of anyone with no sense of shame, without the ability to feel (or at least to acknowledge) embarrassment, living in an era when people put their most intimate thoughts in a public post, when "reality TV" thrives on the most humiliating moments, when CCTV cameras everywhere are normalized, and when society embraces the embarrassment of others.
