We have areas with lower pop density too, and people question more/better public transport...

I have a strong suspicion it's more of what we are used to than what is possible.

Just take the user experience part that is so often neglected. Public transport usually means waiting around a lot, both because of insufficient frequency (exascerbated by little free time, if one has to work bullshit jobs) or plain bad service. Bad service? Well, with anything travelling on a road like a bus, it's often traffic jams. The cars, the many, many cars. Now my bus is late!
Add in absurd prices (no idea about US, but i pay 20€ to visit the next big town and back).
Ah, prices... you have to get a ticket every time, instead of refuel every few days. It's the little things that annoy us, right?
Being efficient and having climate scientists screaming doom in a way that threatens their livelyhood (leaked the last climate report before it could get censored), i'd say tax financed instead of single payer tickets would be reasonable. Can't be more than 1% of bailouts for banks and stuff.

I'd say public transport is made so shitty (on purpose) that we can't even imagine how great it could be.

Remember the part about "seriously disabled" i said? If someone can't reach the next permanently serviced station/bus stop, a taxi service is absolutely warranted.

And i guess if we build what people need often where people live, that would not even be needed all that often. Need to accept a job 100 mega-feet away? I sense a disturbance in the economy, luke.
