Karaka Point (📷1) sits btw Whatamango & Waikawa bays; a worthwhile 2.5km road walk from the DOC camp. The reserve contains remnant defensive earthworks, pits & hut foundations from a 16th century Ngāti Mamoe pā (📷2); it was subsequently taken by various iwi, falling most recently in 1830. There are views far down Queen Charlotte Sound/ Tōtaranui (📷3) & a small beach (📷4).
