We make fun of Website Boy, but the idea, "people will pay* us to create some cool software; we'll run servers with economies of scale but other people can run their own servers and provide their own moderation if they want; if someone burns out or runs out of cash people can just migrate to another server" is brilliant.
Because the fact is, running a social media site is exhausting and expensive. Not everyone can do it, certainly not forever.
