Man I remember things being pretty good in the mid 90’s up to 9/11.
I was around 10 when the Soviet Union fell, I remember when the crime bill passed (and our local PD started straight-up executing drug dealers and car thieves) and things got pretty calm.
Politically correct was a term of derision that everyone laughed at because it was universally stupid. Blue-dog democrats that liked guns were still a thing, the left was anti immigration because it took away from blue collar jobs, race relations were pretty normalized…on the superficial, day to day lived experience level of things it was all pretty good up till 9/11. Then the patriot act, leading to chocolate jesus getting elected, and holy hell it all happened so fast.
My wife and I were sitting on our front porch watching our kids ride dirt bikes a few days ago and reminiscing about it and couldn’t believe how quickly things had gone from seemingly normal to…this.
My father, with his longer timeline, says we never even really got to live in America, it died around 1970.
