The scriptures I read actually say something very close to this.
According to them, there are a number of branches like this running in parallel. All broken in different ways and with no intention of most of them ever being merged.
There will be some valuable code snippets in many of course that will be lifted out before they get torched. And a lot of the code was written to serve a purpose and then be discarded. Kind of like scaffolding.
