This is probably hard to imagine, but sprintf() in C was a function of convenience and readability. Imagine having to increase the string buffer size, appending the casted value of the variable to a char array for each thing you wanted to concatenate. Basically, sprintf was the format() for the era and most, if not all?, C derived languages can understand it in some form, such as printf() in Java.
