I think it is generally bad to refer to entire wars, historically, by their U.S. military operation names.
E.g., don't say, "He was a veteran of Operation Desert Storm," but rather, "He was a veteran of the Persian Gulf War."
Operation names are ephemeral and often propagandistic, and in any event have no resonance for non-U.S. people.
