All this right wing discourse about Barbie’s “hidden message” is so weird to me. There is exactly nothing, zero, about that movie that is subtle or subtextual or sotto voce. That movie is brazenly hitting you over the head, unapologetically, and joyfully with its feminist and queer anti-capitalist “message”. If anything, what’s “hidden” is how it’s still a giant ad for a global corporation trying to sell shit through a Hollywood tie-in while trying to manage and take back control of its brand — given how it’s been received, critiqued, and used by feminist and queer consumers since the early 90s.
