I think we’ve evolved to internalize logical fallacies under certain specific conditions, particularly if they’re promoted by someone we accept as authoritative. If our ancestors hadn’t done that (and known when to do it and when not to do it), they would’ve been rejected by the tribe and weeded from the gene pool.
Virtue signaling is one method of decentralized consensus formation. Love it or hate it, it’s an important and necessary function. Logical fallacies can serve a very specific purpose, which means they shouldn’t reflexively be chalked up as evidence of stupidity.
