I don't think an adequate public mesh will ever happen, and that isn't my use-case.
I use it primarily for backup communications for family and friends in the event of a power/Internet loss, and for subscription-free (no LTE) tracking pets.
The caveat being, of course, that I'm solely responsible for establishing adequate ground coverage and links between remote nodes.
