Ok, probably should have asked that earlier, but about how many drives are we talking right now? My diy storage was intended to house up to around 40 drives, just like an off the shelve one.
If you only want 5 drives or 10 drives ok, but as soon as you need to chain sas expanders to connect everything together it becomes a shit show.
Esp. if you can't literally buy any usable sas expander for less than a used disk array...
