The Hong Kong Association of the Heads of Secondary Schools proposed that universities adopt a points system based on candidates' best five subjects to reduce pressure on students; Veronica Yau Kit-ying, vice-chairwoman of the association, highlighted stress over language requirements, specifically the need for a level 3 pass in Chinese and English; the current admission criteria require level 3 in Chinese and English, level 2 in maths, and level 2 in two electives, known as '332A22'; the association urges the government to drop language requirements to promote vocational training; 332 students were admitted this year through the School Nominations Direct Admission Scheme; Hong Kong Metropolitan University became the first university of applied sciences in March 2024; Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu proposed creating universities of applied sciences in his policy address last year.
