Apparently, you can use a pre-commit hook to block commits to your main branch, but there's no one-flag-flip thing to do this because git, at a fundamental philosophical level, has no notion of "main" branch. Branches are branches. No branch is more special than any other. Linus recognizes that anyone could, at any time, fork Linux, make it more popular than the version he maintains, and become a new main.
That core philosophy point isn't the most helpful thing for workflows where that's nonsense.
