VHS audio quality is pretty good. My back-of-beermat calculations reckon that 250–500kb/s is a reasonable expectation: I guesstimate that one can do ~20kbaud at 8–12 bits per baud, per channel.

The same advanced encoding magic can of course be scaled up to use the video channel too: two orders of magnitude more bandwidth, but computers are likewise orders of magnitude faster than ye olde USR modem. I reckon ~3Mbaud at 6–8 bits per baud is doable, less a big chunk to account for blanking and head switches, and the resulting 15Mb/s is almost useful. I have USB keys which are slower than that.
