The folks in these enclaves are in a lot of ways behaving like doomsday preppers—making exquisite plans for and taking exceeding care to protect against a William Gibson novel we're not actually in.

There's a deep flaw in their rationales that tends to follow this pattern:

- The governments and corpos can't be trusted (fine)
- The governments and corpos want your data (yah)
- It is bad they want your data (Maybe?)
- With your data, they will control you (?)
- In order to resist control, you must avoid their products (???)

It's never quite explicated how that control takes place. Is it disinformation? Direct marketing? Something more sinister? It isn't clear.

But let me run this bit of heresy by you. For some people the exchange of data for services is a reasonable trade. The service they receive actually,

y'know,

works.

And with it, maybe, just maybe, they can start a revolution.
