Rewind time, stop the failed attempt from even taking place -- give the assassin a flat tire or beat him to a pulp in his bed so he can't do his thing. Trump goes on his merry way, bloviating and puffing himself up and feeling like a badass, and his crowd feeds off it. Now when Biden drops out, Harris faces a version of Trump who is much better able to deal with everything.
Now rewind time again, and make sure the bullet doesn't miss. Trump is now gone, but his army of reprobates now have a martyr to get violent over. Harris wins the election, but a lot of people get hurt and killed.
In the real world, where the assassin failed but came within inches of succeeding, Trump has to deal with real trauma for the first time in his life, while *also* dealing with a bunch of court cases, *and* running against a seasoned prosecutor who energizes the Democratic and Independent voters. For Donald Trump, this is the nightmare scenario. He's scared, he's shown weakness in public, he's incoherent, he has no plan, no strength, no energy left. His dreams are dying in front of him and there's nothing he can do.
He may actually be wondering if the bullet actually hit him and he's in Hell now.
