Indulgences never went away. I keep thinking about this line from a recent Andreessen podcast as described by The Verge:
"Once upon a time, Andreessen says, you could get very rich and then give the money away in philanthropy, “and you get enormous credit for that. And, you know, it absolves you of whatever.”"
'absolves' is a telling verb choice there
