My personal website is a static site and I do host it from home, in a Raspberry pi.
Currently I have a VPS running (serverspace.io) to handle a few different things. One of them is a wireguard tunnel that forwards ports 80 and 443 to my home network via the tunnel. This fixes my site's IP to that of the VPS (my home has a dynamic IP), and it also acts as a barrier separating my home network from the outside world.
For my larger sites in which performance is important, I just put them into their own VPS.
My VPS provider is serverspace.io. They have worked well for me, but I haven't used other providers, so I don't have a good metric to tell you how they compare to others.
