Which is exactly why you can't rely on federation you will have to yourself or use bots to crawl in networks talk to people & drop the link inconspiciously. Also SEO indexing will help any searchers find the site. It's true people want to engage with their own but when the owner of a website is defederating whatever they don't like people will realize & see. Me personally if I was a lemmy user & I was on a instance & I saw massive defederation of other instances. I myself would most likely leave because to me that's censorship & I don't like that so I would make my own incentive to seek another place.
This is how the world is today & projections can only go as far as the mind can think which is why we need to do & observe the results.
