The US military has bragged about how they have provided a career for the less educated, impoverished, and unemployed. I see it as the US Govt causing mass inflation, the dust bowl, depressions, etc. and telling the people they priced out of the market to eat a bag of shit and go fight wars.
There definitely are war sycophants and murderous psychopaths that didn't think twice to enter the military, but that's still a small percentage of the military. Even people in the military don't want to fight wars. Otherwise, how do we explain the series of ceasefires between warring national armies around Christmas of 1914 during WW1?
I'm not downplaying the evil of "just following orders". What I am saying is that Conscripted soldiers, the Hitler Youth, Villagers eating one another in the Holodomor; These people were coerced to act under the direction of powerful Authoritarian infrastructures.
These are by no means virtuous people, though do we hate the victims of Stockholm Syndrome? They are thrown into a terrible situation and don't know what else to do but make the best of it.
Still defend ourselves but not hold hate in our hearts for people in a worse off situation than ourselves.
I have strong feelings towards Communism but feel sad for people who believe in it.
This is just a first draft version of my thoughts on the matter.
