git is a unix native application, it thinks in terms of unix filesystem... in unix, everything is a file
plan9's main protagonist, Rob Pike, pioneered the idea of "everything is a server" which was actually the genesis of HTTP, because it implies both filesystems and sockets are now under one umbrella
