So if somebody attacks you in your home, and I come to your help – but then have a change of heart and start negotiating with the attacker how much each of us will take from you, that means it was a "proxy" fight from begin with?
Do you still have a right to defend yourself in such a situation?
Would it perhaps make sense for other neighbors to come to your help, so that this shitty behavior doesn't spread?
