That's interesting. There's really no universal manual as to how some aspects of the network's privacy considerations are to be handled.

One thing I think you might be interested in Mike, is how Mitra handles private/DM type messages @ instead of what some platforms call "unlisted" or "public", etc. I discovered this by accident some time ago, and found it particularly refreshing.

Okay so it goes like this - You receive an @mentioned message to your inbox along with one or two other persons from a masto account. Then, you go to respond, I had never considered the negative privacy concerns possible, but I did want to bascially, for lack of a better term, "cc" myself on another platform, so as to keep myself in the loop on the conversation.

I can't remember now, but it was probably because I didn't want to be limited to 500 Characters in a private conversation between three friends. I was able to add myself no problem, and received the so-called cc message on that other platform.

Well, later on, a similar situation arose, and I think I was going to add someone else to a conversation we were having in private - it didn't work. The error message, as I recall, was as crappy as any I've ever received, but I couldn't add that other person - I was on a Mitra instance (this account, actually). When I inquired, I was informed this was a security/privacy feature...

At first, my reaction was a bit dubious, but then I thought, what if someone was in an @mention private DM with one or more folks and at some point, someone with nefarious motives decided to add an additional resource to the conversation - that would be tantamount to breaking the understood convention of privacy when sending emails between people privately and off-list.

I did put it in a list somewhere of standard testing suites for evaluating Fediverse (or other) network communication platforms/protocols, but sadly, since moving back to the Los Angeles area I haven't really had the time to be very active in the community - today was kind of an exception due to a cancellation wrt a social event that was scheduled.

Anyway, I'm not sure what Hubzilla or Streams has in the way of accommodating those privacy considerations, but thought I'd mention it if it hadn't been something that needed to be addressed in the past :)
