as in "Kirkcudbright" (and a number of other place- and personal- names). St Cuthbert probably pronounced his name something like 'Coothbrecht', but he spelt it with an eth, and that's how it was spelt until the introduction of printing.

Eth had, of course, also been a recognised letter in Middle English, but it had ceased to be recognised in English by the Tudor period.
