Iirc it was the river names (skamander? and another one that i cant recall immediately) that narrowed down the area Schliemann then went on to look for suspicious mounds for him to start digging.
(Haven't looked it up to check those details).
I do recall that he was not academically trained, a pure enthusiast driven by his love of the classics and by the general spirit of the age when most of these great archaeological discoveries were being made in Egypt and mesopotamia
