Someone asked me why I dislike seeing #ads so much and my response was:
An ad is a communication against—or at best irrelevant to—my interests, made by someone trying really hard to put something in my head that I didn't solicit and don't want. And they often work really well. I prefer to spend as little of my life as possible figuring out which things in my head are not helpful to my actual goals, so it's a lot easier and more pleasant just to keep as many ads out as I can.
