Update on the Hotpoint saga:
I found an email address in Hotpoint's returns policy which their support agents refuted the existence of, so emailed them a transcript of the saga so far. This was a Whirlpool address, which is Hotpoint's parent company.
Now I've received a reply from a European Appliances address, presumably another subsidiary, telling me to refuse the delivery when it arrives, to avoid their £50 collection fee, and then they'll refund me!
Lesson learned. Just tell the parents!
