As an outsider (but teacher in maths _and_ social studies), the most obvious change seems to be to get rid of "winner takes it all" in the electoral college. Why on earth don't a party get ~60% of the electors if it gets 60% of the votes??
(Ranked choice, and lots of other stuff, would also be nice, though. But this seems like an easy first step.)
