I’m old. Like pretty much everyone born in the 70s I got to see the evolution of trolls. But more than that, I got to see endless numbers of forums. And from that, there was a really big takeaway - you may not see lurkers, but they see you.
Responding to a troll is never for the troll’s benefit. It’s for the lurker’s benefit. It’s for those unseen people who your rational tone may convince to take a more reasonable path.
It’s (for me) a decision based on ethics, not on ease.
