Last time I made boards that use these batteries, I designed them with footprints for both orientations so I could have one board regardless of where I was able to source the batteries from. Then I just populate the slot that I need.
Did a similar trick with my OLED displays, since they tend to have some of the pins swapped depending on supplier.
