Reading the history of science and policy around cigarettes & smoking. In 1957, the UK Medical Research Council planned to publish a bombshell report by Doll & Hill linking cigarettes *and* air pollution to lung cancer.
UK politicians were concerned about the political risks of naming air pollution a public health risk, so they asked the MRC to re-consider. Scientists were allowed to name smoking as a cause in their final report but ultimately downplayed air pollution.
