In the context of a layman's term article, "stability" is when the aircraft does what you expect it to do.

Push the stick forward, big houses. Pull the stick back, little houses.

Boeing reprogrammed the flight computer to "increase stability" by ignoring the stick input under certain conditions. That's not aligned with expectations of the crew.

When I pull back on the stick, and the computer decides to go nose down 26 times in 10 minutes and flies me into the ground, that's not increased stability, except in very technical terms.
