Possibly a sampling bias in his observations, among other things. In his anecdote-set, he’s probably not ‘controlling for lust and evaluating how interesting women are’ at local bookstores, research symposiums, or climbing gyms.
Also, at an average club or street party (or wherever he is), I wonder how many men would be objectively interesting (whatever that means and to whom)?
Though there’s probably also naturally different selection preferences playing out
