I lived in a trailer for years, and near poverty much of my childhood. My family had accents. As a young adult I learned to hide mine because of the shame my wealthier peers made me feel about my background.
When people use terms like "white trash," "trailer trash," "yokel," "redneck," "hillbilly," to describe folks they assume are conservative, it feels similar to the way it feels when people use antitrans slurs about me.
I find myself feeling that same shame. That's the purpose of a slur.
