Apologies everyone.
TL;DR: We're now on v4.2 of mastodon server and things should be coming back to normal
Longer version: I upgraded the server from debian 10 to 11 then 12, not realising that I'd upgraded nodejs too far for mastodon 4.1.9
This caused most things to fail, but not catastrophically, hard to fix!
There are about 70k backlogged jobs, so you might see things be slow, or delayed, for a while.
Re-indexing for search is underway too
