Photography can be dead expensive. But it doesn't have to. All the b&w shots on my Pixelfed account is shot on this, an old Nikon Coolpix P7000. Released in 2010. Bought used for about 50 Euros.
It's not perfect. The internal battery is dead (they often are on these cameras), so I have to reset it every time I change battery. But I get close to a thousand pictures on one charge, so I can live with that.
And it is so much fun.
