In UK, Dorset Fire Brigade had footage of a wildfire jumping a dual carriageway, and it was this that taught them (& land managers) to think of them as fire defendable lines.

Of course Canadian wildfires are much more intense, and likely to jump significantly further than a dual carriageway. This was why I thought planting a barrier might be very expensive to be successful.
