Oh, and, for the record, I don't even seem to have trouble differentiating between chips and chips in most contexts. If they're packaged, they're chips, and if they're fresh they're hot chips (or just chips).
The meter/metre thing, though keeps biting me in the arse. (oh right, also arse/ass, I think they've become interchangeable in Australian English over the last couple decades)
