I think you might be trying to describe a concept that's difficult to put into words!
But I'll take a stab at it: Are you thinking of the idea that there is no "top" or "surface" to the air, because air is an intangible gas and doesn't have a physical boundary? So, in a sense, there isn't really a "lid" on the air.
