I can't speak regarding the before times but fedi seemed to be growing without issue up until the hacks. A lot of casual users left after the chudbuds compromise, but admins still felt fairly safe since it was just a social engineering scam.
After the poast/ baest hack that involved a real vulnerability in pleroma fe I saw the lights go out on numerous unaffected instances (esp single user ones) almost immediately when they realised that there were probably lots more holes (there were).
After that with the loosening of restrictions on xitter, so many people have gone back and as you see your interactions lessen, you start wondering whether you want to spend money on alt social media. Hopefully it isn't circling the drain, because the big tech offerings can certainly change on a whim.
