The other thing that's a big pain is comments - you see almost NONE on a fresh instance. Unless you wanna be *that* person who comments the same super-cool thing as someone earlier, you have to open the original post (on their server) and check the comments.
Even with a well federated instance you won't always see all comments, but you get enough to get the flavour.
