I just watched Empire Strikes Back with my son. I "finally" watched it, I should say. I could never really get Mom and his older sister into Star Wars and I was starting to lose hope.
I watched A New Hope with him a couple of years ago, but while he didn't dislike it, he was not amazed either (it's true that the movie is starting to look a little old for his generation, one thing I had forgotten is how slow the pace actually is, compared to current movies.)
He didn't really want to watch Empire at first, but he loves Tauntauns and he wanted to know about the real Yoda (after becoming familiar with Baby Yoda.)
At the beginning of the movie, he was very talkative, had a lot of questions, but was into it, and as the movie went, he became more and more quiet (always a sign he loves something.)
Now, the big reveal.... The funny thing is that he wasn't even shocked by it because... in the "dark side tree" scene on Dagobah, when Luke's face appears inside ghost-Vader's helmet, we had this conversation:
"Dad, is this Luke's face?
"Yes."
"Why?"
"🤷"
"Hmmm... Well, Vader can't be Luke, so maybe that's a hint that he is his father or something?"
Me internally: 😱.
And he completely killed me in the end, when Luke is very upset at the reveal and even worse that Ben lied to him and my son to casually say "Maybe there's still some good in Vader."
Now he wants to see Return of the Jedi and the prequels and the sequels...
So, I think this is a win.
