I think The Appleseed Project is the oldest one, going back to 2004 (though the oldest archived sites I found so far are from 2005). I only learned about OSW from this article: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/10128476 – I think they were building on top of XMPP like Buddycloud, but I need to look further into it.
Yeah, I agree ATproto should be included.
