Normally a floated piece is attached to a matboard that is cut smaller than the art, so it is hidden underneath. But because of the thin paper I need to bring the matboard to the edge of the art to avoid a shadow. I could mount the piece directly to the backer, but I like to have a separator to give it some depth. I like it thicker for more depth effect so I'll use 8- instead of 4-ply mat. It needs an undercut bevel so you don't see the edges.
