Edom means red in the Biblical Hebrew. It relates to Esau the eldest son of Isaac who sold his birthright to his younger brother Jacob. The descendants of Esau that lived south of Israel/Judah were called Edomites. They had lost God's favor due to Esau's treatment of Jacob "For the violence done to your brother Jacob, shame shall cover you, and you shall be cut off forever." Jacob's decedents turned out to be the tribes of Israel. Esau was left cursed.
