I know sometimes people browse my instance without a fedi account, especially today, so:
Don’t overthink moving to fedi. Join any server today and figure out the rest later.
Most servers running modern software (akkoma, hometown, mastodon, glitch, calckey…) let you move servers later without losing most follows or followers.
Just pick one NOW. Once you do you’ll be in a better position to decide where to move.
And small instances are good. I run an instance for me only and it works out. You do not need to use a big one, being big don’t make them work better. You also definitely do not have to find one that is “on-topic”, you’re a person not a brand here, how can a person be “off-topic”?
Just join whatever now. Ideally, you want a server that has clear and reasonable rules on “no hate speech, tag adult stuff”, and a short blocklist on the about page (if they block more than 100 servers, look elsewhere)
