Honestly not a terrible thing, especially as the options for large parallel sram in DIP are limiting/expensive (AS5C4008), while TSSOP and similar SMD are fairly plentiful and tend to be cheaper.
A dual row pin header is certainly hobbyist friendly (except for breadboards) and would keep the size down.
