Well, Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure looks about the same on every platform regardless of what the Wikipedia entry may say. Even the PC versions look virtually the same. Which actually brings up another point: it might be more a matter of a lot of games of the time period tended towards such styles.
It's worth noting it does have bright levels. The first level is supposed to be deep jungle (eg lots of cover.) In particular the waterfall is a bright area.
